Violent Crime Rate
What is the threat of physical harm?
Violent crime rate tracks the number of incidents such as assault, robbery, and homicide per 100,000 residents. It reflects public safety and the effectiveness of prevention and response systems.
When violent crime is high, it can signal underlying issues like poverty, trauma, or lack of access to mental health care. Communities with few resources for prevention may feel less safe or less willing to engage in public life. Cities can respond through violence prevention programs, trauma-informed policing, and community investment.
When violent crime is low, it reflects safer neighborhoods where residents can move freely, trust one another, and engage in civic life without fear.
Primary Indicator
Reported violent crimes per 100,000 city residents
Data were obtained from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program API. To calculate the violent crime rate, we obtained the monthly total reported violent crimes, aggregated by year, divided by the total city population, and multiplied it by 100,000.
